This cedar box design represents the great respect one has for the Bear-Mother Legend. We are taught to honour all things great and small, and that to embrace and not fear our unanswered questions will lead us to understanding instead of despair.
Clifton Fred was born in Whitehorse, Yukon as a Crow of the Tlingit tribe. His artistic sensibility reflects the views and achievements of this cultural ancestry. As he puts it, "Through our art I hope we can remind each other of who we were, what we did and how we felt it. If understanding our beginnings enables us to know our ends, then we may find that all cultures have the same origins and therefore the same destiny."
