The image of the Laughing Buddha is based on a wandering Zen Buddhist monk, Hotei, in Japan, who lived centuries ago and is believed to be Maitreya, or the Buddha to come. The statue's plump figure and benign countenance suggest contentment, magnanimity and plenitude.
In this particular Statue, Hotei is depicted with a bowl raised over his head. Etched on the bottom of this statue are the words: "Don't worry, Be Happy."
